Jacob Log 8-18-08: Mom and Dad Screwed Up

Matt | August 18, 2008

Our poor little man has been going through a little rough patch.  To give some background, he started going 3-4 days between “poo-poos” and it started to affect his eating.  We met with our pediatrician and she checked him out and gave him a clean bill of health.  She recommended a little prune juice when he gets backed up and mentioned a formula switch should be one of the last things we try.  Well that afternoon we were at Target and we found the Target brand sensitive formula, which was identical to Similac Sensitive that Jacob has been on for months.  The Target brand was $10 cheaper so we decided to give it a try and see if it helped get him more regular.

What we didn’t know is that we just kicked off a horrible series of events.  Jacob became so constipated on the Target formula that he started straining while his face turned beet red trying to push the poo-poos out.  It got so bad that we had to pick him up and calm him down for fear he would pop a blood vessel.  We called the hospital advice line and the nurse said we should try half-diluted prune juice.  We started him on it in the afternoon and by the evening he had cleared himself out.

Seeing him that upset on the new formula made me sick to my stomach knowing that we caused that pain.  We decided to immediately switch him back to Similac Sensitive.  Over the last four days Jacob has been a completely different child.  He hasn’t been his normal, happy, laughing self and seems to constantly be in pain.  He is gassier than before and we’re guessing he may be an early teether.  He’s constantly drooling and he is chewing on anything he can get his tiny hands on.  Hopefully this is a short lived phase and he gets back to his fun-loving self.  Mom and dad are out of ideas for trying to soothe him.

That’s the short version and there are a ton of details I left out regarding him not taking naps, becoming bored of his toys, and needing constant attention.  We have a pediatric appointment at 2:45 today and hopefully we have some answers and/or new ideas.

Jacob Log 4-24-08: Day 4

Matt | April 24, 2008

Jennifer and I had a great day with Jacob! Yesterday we were a little concerned that he wasn’t going #2, but he eased our fears today by going not once, not twice, but five times! It seems the milk is starting to work its magic on his tummy.

Jacob was more alert today when Grandpa came over. He opens his eyes really wide now and focuses for a long time. I’m starting to think his eyes will turn brown over the coming weeks. They’re not a bright blue and they can only darken as his eye pigment develops. Since he had a 50% chance of brown eyes it’s not much of a surprise.

We made a trip to Goores and Target to pick up a couple nursing essentials. Jacob stayed in the car in his carseat. He seemed to really enjoy the car ride with his mom next to him. We also finally got a chance to put stuff away around the house and vacuum. The cat litter was embarrassingly bad as well. We have established a mobile baby center between our bedroom at night/morning and the front room during the day. We got a diaper caddy from Goores today to help tote the changing items around.

Jacob still hasn’t slept in his crib. Jennifer and I are just a little nervous about leaving him alone so he sleeps in a basonet next to our bed. We set him down in his crib while grandpa was here and he looked so little in his big crib! He seemed very relaxed in his crib, but I’ll still want to get a video monitor rather than the basic audio monitor we have now.

Tomorrow EJ and Veronica are going to come over to meet Jacob. It’s 10:38pm and I’m watching Lost right now. Jacob is due to eat again in an hour so I’m not going to get much sleep tonight!

  • Matt I just submitted a request to Service Magic for an electrician to install a chandelier for us. Does anybody have a licensed electrician referral? The ceiling is about 22ft high and we need to move the chandelier a couple feet. March 6, 2010

  • Jennifer JD has been working on counting over the past month. He would say, "One, two, Fiiiiiive." No 3 or 4. Tonight, out of nowhere he counted to 4 all by himself. I feel proud of him as his Mommy, but so sad at the same time when I see my baby growing up soooooo fast. March 11, 2010
